Per the orders sheâd received from Starfleet and the strongest possible recommendation from the United Federation of Planets, Areel Shaw had turned over the contents of her file to Samuel Cogley. She didnât simply go over the file with Cogley, she gave him a physical copy of what was in it. Everything he was entitled to under the rules of discovery: the results of Louis Alexanderâs investigation and anything that might be deemed exculpatory.
Alexanderâs investigation consisted of video recordings he had taken with his tricorder. There was a video of Daniel Lathamâs office that night with the strewn papers and upended furniture, as well as the dead body of Daniel Latham and the unconscious form of MakâTor next to Latham, the murder weapon by MakâTorâs right hand. There were copies of the scans Alexander had run proving the phaser next to MakâTor was the murder weapon. Another video showed what Alexander found in Lathamâs study at home, after he and Galdamiz had spoken with Helen Latham and gotten her permission to look at the study for possible clues.
The centerpiece of the investigatory file was the video depositions and interviews. Although both Khogo and MakâTor refused to speak with Alexander because âit is not what Klingons do,â he did interview Grigoriy Nemov, Homero Galdamiz, and Chiaki Iino. In three separate interviews, each man described, in turn, how and why they went to Daniel Lathamâs office on Landing Day and what they found there. At the end of the interviews, at Alexanderâs request, all four went to Lathamâs office. There Alexander asked Iinoâbecause he was the âbest actorâ in the groupâto re-create what they saw when they entered. Iino showed them where they stood and what they could see. Then, with Alexander standing where the three members of Serenityâs senior staff had stood, Iino duplicated MakâTorâs movements, when they found him kneeling over Lathamâs body. Iino showed Alexander how the Klingon was kneeling beside Lathamâs body and turned his head to look at the three men when they entered. Iino recreated MakâTorâs efforts to stand and attack them, even after he had been shot with three phasers.
The interviews ended with Nemovâs curt Da, and Galdamizâs enthusiastic âPretty much dead on,â when Alexander asked them if Iinoâs re-creation matched their memories of what they saw that night.
